Song Review: Syesha Mercado - Christmas Melody

Oh, how I've missed that beautiful voice! American Idol Season 7 star Syesha Mercado is back with a gorgeous Christmas melody! The new song "Christmas Melody" is a captivating yet elegant holiday ballad about the memories of a past love staying in your head like the joyful tunes of the season. Syesha's voice soars in its many ranges as she sings this beautiful new song.

This happens to be the first original song to be released by Syesha since American Idol, and it definitely does not disappoint. Syesha has always been a forced to be reckoned with, and this song is just another example.

David Archuleta will be having his kind of Christmas

David Archuleta heads out on his My Kind of Christmas Tour this Thursday in New York until December 21 in Beaver Creek, CO. While fans can expect old and new pop and Christmas songs, USA Today reports that David will be singing one special song this December:

"The tour got its name from a fan's suggestion, playing off My Kind of Perfect, a track from David's album The Other Side of Down. But once David had the name, he and a friend decided to write a new song using the title, and he'll be singing My Kind of Christmas at the shows."

David goes on to explain, "It was just spur of the moment, but I ended up really liking how it turned out, explaining what Christmas means to me. What is my kind of Christmas? That's what we describe. It'll be exciting to share an original Christmas song with the fans."

Looking forward to hearing the new holiday tune, along with many more Christmas classics throughout the tour!

Album Review: Hot Chelle Rae - Whatever

I became a fan of pop rock band Hot Chelle Rae after seeing their opening set at Big Time Rush's concert last August, and have since become more intrigued by this group. Today they release their second album Whatever, featuring their hit single "Tonight Tonight." This album also features collaborations with the New Boyz on hit "I Like It Like That," Bei Maejor on a funky "Radio" and a beautiful duet with pop singer Demi Lovato on the rock ballad "Why Don't You Love Me?" The guys go from pop rock love songs like "Downtown Girl" and "Forever Unstoppable," to anthems like "Beautiful Freaks" and "Whatever," to taking it down a notch in sweet pop ballads like "Honestly" and "Keep You With Me" on this album. Each song perfectly blends with the next and each holds a message, whether it's for love, inspiration or partying.

This youthful and fun group isn't just your typical rock boy band - they bring a little something different to the table. They have an innocence that overpowers their angst. There's not one bad song as Hot Chelle Rae perfects with their charisma and uniqueness, both musically and with their aspect, on this new album.

Big Time Rush, Michael Bublé, Neil Diamond and more at Christmas in Rockefeller Center

Tomorrow night, stars will gather and celebrate the Christmas season with a gorgeous tree lighting at Rockefeller Center in New York City for the 79th annual Christmas in Rockefeller Center special. Big Time Rush and Neil Diamond have just recently joined the lineup, which will already feature Michael BublĂ©, who just last month released a Christmas album, Tony Bennett and guest appearances from American Idol star Katharine McPhee, The Voice winner Javier Colon, the Radio City Rockettes and many more.

Along with the performances on the show will be a tree lighting with a Norway Spruce tree that's 74 ft. tall and weighs 10 tons, a tradition that has been celebrated since 1933 when Rockefeller Plaza opened. The 14th annual Christmas in Rockefeller Center special will air on NBC tomorrow night at 8pm EST.

David Archuleta and Mannheim Steamroller perform on Pandora skating show

Pandora's jewelry's skating show Pandora Unforgettable Holiday Moments on Ice was filmed a few weeks ago and aired today on NBC. The show featured popular skaters such as Brian Boitano, Rachael Flatt and Michael Weiss, skating to the music of Mannheim Steamroller and David Archuleta.

Among the great performances of Mannheim Steamroller were some beautiful arrangements with David Archuleta, including David singing "Above The Northern Lights" and a gorgeous performance of "Silent Night" with David and Chip Davis. David also took to the piano as he performed a stunning version of his song "To Be With You," even changing the lyrics to "And I've been waiting for the snow to fall." You can watch all three performances below:

Taylor Swift brings Selena Gomez on stage for duet

At Taylor Swift's show at Madison Square Garden a few nights ago, Taylor surprised the crowd when pal Selena Gomez came on stage for a duet! Taylor introduced her with "One of my best friends who is such an amazing singer and after four years of being best friends we have never stepped on stage together and I think that's such a shame. So it just so happens that Selena is here tonight," as Selena stepped out on stage and the two sang Selena's hit "Who Says." Watch a video of the performance below:

Interview with Jeff LeBlanc

Jeff Leblanc is a pop/rock musician from New York who has toured with big artists such as Matt Nathanson, Ingrid Michaelson and Lee DeWyze. Now he's adding David Archuleta to that list, as he'll be opening for David on his My Kind of Christmas Tour this December. I've been able to ask Jeff about his music, David and the Archie fans and what it's like to be compared to John Mayer.

What age did you begin music?
I actually started pretty late compared to most. I had always lived and breathed for music and had always been around it growing up. However, I didn't pick up a guitar until I was a senior in high school. I finally mustered the courage to sing in front of people shortly after and the rest is history I suppose...

What’s your favorite song to perform off of your EP Worth Holding On To?
I love playing them all! Although, "What Do You Got To Lose" is really fun to play live because it usually turns into a fun jam at the end!

What inspires you to write songs?
Everything! I'd certainly say the theme of the new album is "heart."  There's quite a few relationship songs; break-ups, make-ups and everything in between. I'm also a very nostalgic person so there's a bunch of songs discussing growing up, old friendships and getting older.

People have compared you to John Mayer, what is that like?
It's a double-edged sword. I've grown up on John's music and he continues to be one of my favorite artists; it's an honor to be compared to him. However, I certainly want to maintain my own identity as a musician.

Are you excited to be opening for David Archuleta on his Christmas tour this year?
Yes! David is an amazing artist and I've been following him for years. This is really going to be an awesome tour...

Who are your musical influences?
The list is endless. I live for any and all kinds of music. For the sake of time, I'll list a handful here...
Jamie Cullum, John Mayer, Howie Day, Norah Jones, D'Angelo, Keith Urban, Ryan Adams, Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Do you have a message to all of your fans, as well as the David Archuleta fans who you‘ll be seeing on tour?
My fans are the reason I can play music for a living. They've been so supportive from day one. I'm so excited to meet everyone on tour this December as David's fans are so passionate about music. I'll be doing meet and greets in every city so if you're at a show, make sure you come say hello afterwards!

Thanks again Jeff for the great interview! I look forward to seeing you next Friday at David Archuleta's show in NYC!

Band Review: Almost Normal

Upon hearing about Las Vegas-bound band Almost Normal, I was urged to give their music a listen. It became very clear right away that this is a very intense, hard rock band with music that I'm not particularly into. Between the veracious "Vague Us" about Sin City and the techno rock "Nancy Nancy" about a troubled girl, this band is obviously extreme with their music. Though one song did spark my interest. The band literally goes down a bit in "We're Going Down," as it's a slower rock ballad (eh, more my thing). This song starts out with the soft, fun beat of a drum, then goes into an enjoyable melody as lead singer Ashley Lampman sings these intriguing and emotional lyrics about a relationship falling apart and 'going down'. This soft rock song definitely won't disappoint.

Almost Normal's music is fast and a bit disturbing, so if you're into that sort of thing, you'll love it (totally serious here). They have a We Are The Fallen feel with their rock songs and the excessive amount of male band members compared to female. If you like intense, gutsy rock music, this is the band for you. Though other than the song "We're Going Down," they're not really my cup of tea. Although I've heard this band wants to expand their music, I think they're perfect right where they are in Vegas, as this is the music that is popular over there and where they'll be most successful, in my opinion. Though I'm not fond of this kind of music, I do wish the best of luck to this band, as their music IS good if you're into this genre.

Song Review: Rascal Flatts ft. Natasha Bedingfield - Easy

So, I've just been introduced to this song... where have I been? I usually know about new Rascal Flatts music, but better late than never right? "Easy" is a duet between country group Rascal Flatts and pop singer Natasha Bedingfield, and is one that will have you hooked with it's fascinating concept and charming voices of Gary and Natasha. This country ballad starts out with Gary who's pretending to be over his ex, even though it isn't easy. As the second verse starts, Natasha admits that she too isn't over him. But what he/she don't know is hard it is to make it look so easy, that little spin in lyrics will hit you and make the song all the more intriguing. Simple, touching and enjoyable, and I wouldn't expect anything more or less from these singers.

Rascal Flatts and Natasha also performed the song on this year's CMA Awards. Check out the video below:

David Archuleta surprises his #1 fan

This morning, David Archuleta stopped by Studio 5 in Utah where he surprised his #1 fan, Edith. Edith turns 97 tomorrow and she shows just how much she loves David, with pictures on her walls and going to numerous concerts, but has yet to meet her favorite singer. But that all changed this morning when David surprised Edith with balloons and a special birthday gift - his Christmas CD and DVD with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir! You can watch the segment below:

Edith says that David is an inspiration, but I think Edith is an inspiration for being such a dedicated fan even at the age of 97. Proves that David's music really does touch people of all ages.

Interview with band Montë Mar

Montë Mar is a LA based band that just took off this year when frontman Brian Green decided to completely quit other gigs and work on his own band. With friends Bill, Capital, Kyle and Dylan by his side, the alternative pop band released their first EP Different Place and went on a West Coast tour last summer. The first time I interviewed Brian, Montë Mar seemed like a side project. Now just a few months later and this band is getting ready to make their first full length album. I got the chance to talk to all five of the guys about their music, how the band was created and each of their 'must haves' while on tour.

Where did you come up with the name Monte Mar?
Brian: MontĂ« Mar is actually the name of the street that I grew up on. We spent a lot of time rehearsing there in our early days, so when it was time to come up with a name, it was a natural fit.

How did you all meet?
Dylan:
Crane and I have mutual friends at USC and I happened to sub on a couple gigs that he was on. We would talk and found that we had very similar taste in music from jazz, rock or whatever. He was working with Brian and Bill on the beginnings of Monte Mar at the time. I was in a place where I wanted to be involved in an original project where I could express my individual creativity. Out of nowhere Crane texted me after months of not talking and asks if I want to come by and play sometime. I checked out the 1 song they had which was Time and loved it. I showed up one day, met Brian and Bill, played and have been in the band ever since.

When was the first time the five of you played in front of an audience? How did it feel?
Bill: If I remember correctly, the first time was at a warehouse/art/music party near downtown LA. It was a huge 2-story warehouse full of visual and live art. I do remember not having monitors in the sound system and we had a hard time hearing each other/our vocals especially. Regardless, we had a fun time, and it felt great to play with Crane, Capital, Dylan, and Brian, as they are all really good musicians!

How was the process of creating your EP Different Place?
Brian: It was interesting in that I feel it took recording these songs for them to truly develop into arrangements we were all happy with. Playing live is a very different experience than recording and I focus on different elements depending on which one I'm involved in. For me, it takes listening under a microscope to make the subtle changes that can really shape an arrangement and recording gives you that luxury. I think we all realized this while recording the EP and are way more focused on making demos of our new songs so that we can pick apart all of the details before recording the record.

Will we be getting a full length Monte Mar record in the future?
Brian: Absolutely. We are working on a lot of new material at the moment and will probably start recording the record in the summer.

This past summer you did a West Coast tour, where would you like to tour next?
Kyle: I would love to make it out to Hawaii soon and play on all the islands. Our friend Garrett McNamara lives out there. He's a world famous surfer that we've done some film scoring for. He's been trying to get us out there to play one of the big surf events they have. The surf community seems to be very receptive to our music and I feel like it would be a fun trip!

What’s your favorite song to play off of your Different Place EP?
Capital: Of course I love playing all our songs, but my personal favorite to perform off the EP is "Complicated Number."  For me this song really captures everything I like about our music, from all-out rock energy to shimmering arpeggios, lots of vocal harmonies and cool guitar & keyboard melodies. Plus it's usually the first song of our set, and I love that fired-up feeling of anticipation I get when I hear Crane start the beat.

What was it like being named one of Myspace Music’s featured artists this past summer?
Capital: It was so awesome we got picked for this. I think we all felt like rock stars for a day. I mean, our picture was featured on the front page just as big as The Strokes! We're always working at trying to make our music better and reach more people, moving forward in baby steps and loving the process, but the MySpace feature felt like a big leap ahead.

What sets you apart from other bands?
Dylan: Its hard for me to justify what sets us apart or makes us different because there is so much music out there. So many creative musicians out there that we love and inspire us as well as numerous ones that we will soon discover. I can tell you that we strive to make the best music we can together, that is honest to us, and share that with as many people as possible.

What’s the best part about performing shows together?
Kyle: The best part of performing with Montë Mar is seeing Capital do hi-kicks!

Do you have a message to all of your fans?
Bill: Check out the new EP on facebook or bandcamp, and share it with all your friends!! Also, come see us at our free Silverlake Lounge Residency, every Monday night in March! Feel free to dance and get a little crazy at our shows!! We do!!

And one final question for all five of you, what’s a ‘must have’ while on tour?
Brian: A sleeping bag... It's a mystery what your sleeping conditions will be like and a good backup plan is always necessary.
Bill: Hmmm...I would say a few things. ipod and ear plugs, so that you can zone out in the bus if you want. A neck pillow...again for the bus ride. Also, willingness to explore the places you're in, and an openness to meet new people along the way!
Capital: Hiking shoes. Some of the most fun we had during down time was hiking on the California coast and the Columbia Gorge up in Oregon.
Kyle: I have learned through the years that every tour comes with it's own level of comfort depending on the budget. Some tours you have to crash on floors and eat oatmeal the whole time, some of them you get your own room in a nice hotel every night. I am cool with either. My only requirement is that everybody respects each others and keeps their cool. Touring can really push people's patience. I was on a tour with another band once where band members got kicked off and were on a plane the next day back to their respective cities. Touring with Montë Mar actually seemed to bring us closer together, which was refreshing!
Dylan: Haha I would say a shower for me. Luckily we are pretty good about that because five guys in a van, driving for hours, loading and unloading, after playing a long gig in a bar gets to be pretty gross.

Thanks again to MontĂ« Mar for the awesome interview and I wish them luck on their future endeavors!

Album Review: Big Time Rush - Elevate

Between BTR's first and second albums, there's an obvious big transition, and there's just one thing to say... they've ELEVATED! Their first album was full of bubble gum pop songs made for the show, and as much as I love those, a lot of these new songs show a more mature Big Time Rush. Kendall, James, Carlos and Logan helped pen eight of the twelve tracks on this album, and though the album doesn't have an initial theme or sound to it, there's definitely lots of catchy beat and great lyrics, not to mention their stronger voices. Not only does this album have songs that have been previous used on the show like "If I Ruled The World" and "Superstar," but it also has a great blend of new songs and sounds. The upbeat songs tunes "Music Sounds Better With U" and "Elevate" will definitely have you dancing, while BTR also takes it down with songs like "All Over Again," "You're Not Alone" and the funky "No Idea." This album also has some electronic pop songs like "Love Me, Love Me" and "Show Me."

But for me the highlights of the album are three specific songs: "Cover Girl," "Time of Our Life" and "Invisible." Three songs all different in sound, but all equally great songs that really show off the guys' voices and bring a warm feel to their album.
"Cover Girl" is a cute, acoustic pop song about a girl who doesn't know just how beautiful she is, but to them, she's their cover girl. An adorable concept for this sweet love song, with relatable lyrics and a very laid back, enjoyable feel to it.

"Time of Our Life" is a catchy, upbeat song that shows a bit more mature voices from the guys as they sing about having the time of their life with a girl. With an intriguing mix of fun, meaningful and love-struck lyrics, this dance song is, in my opinion, one of the best on the album.

"Invisible" was written about their fans, so already, how cute is that? Written in the true perspective of fans, how they may feel invisible amongst everything else going on in the guys' lives. But in the song, the guys emphasize that they don't want their fans to feel invisible, they want them to know that they're always thinking of them and appreciate all they do. Though there's one lyric that hits me every time I listen to the song, "Do you ever think of, what you're standing at the brink of?" That lyric can really get you thinking, do the Rushers realize what they're standing at the brink of? From the very beginning with Big Time Audition to the release of their second album, it's been a successful journey for Big Time Rush, and it's only going to get better from here, and being a fan makes you just as much part of the ride as they are.

How could you be anything but proud of these four boys? This album proves how much they've matured musically, but still has that lovable Big Time Rush feel to it. With a great mix of pop dance songs and sweet, love ballads, this album definitely shows just how much BTR has elevated their music, going from a tv boy band to real music artists.

Song Review: Kristen Alderson - One Life To Live

Kristen Alderson is best known for her role as Starr Manning on the soap opera One Life To Live, which will unfortunately be ending it's daytime run on television this January. But Kristen also has another talent, which has been featured on the show numerous times - singing! Kristen recently recorded a song called "One Life To Live," which is currently being used on the soap.

A sad ballad about life, spinning off the soap opera's name, "One Life To Live" shows off an enjoyable longing in Kristen's voice with dark but inspirational lyrics and a soothing melody. Believe 'cause you only have one life to live, Kristen sings as the songs makes you automatically think of the famous soap opera and the sadness surrounding it's final upcoming weeks. This is a perfect theme song for the show, and I wouldn't be surprised if they used this song for a melancholy ontage for the show's ending. Well done, Kristen!

‎5 days, 5 artists, 5 songs! Day 5: Top 5 - Michael Jackson

All week I've given you my Top 5 songs from Port Chuck, Big Time Rush, Demi Lovato and David Archuleta. Now here are my Top 5 from who I consider the #1 artist, Michael Jackson. Though I didn't become a fan until it was far too late, I've become greatly inspired over the last two years by MJ's music and am always happy to treat myself to some of his musical perfection and longevity. Now here are my Top 5 songs by the one and only, Michael Jackson.

"You Are Not Alone"
This sweet and emotional ballad is one of my favorites from MJ. With the touching lyrics and hypnotizing beat, this song is one of his best. And if you skip to 4:27 of the video you'll see even more why this song is amazing.

"Black or White"
This amicable pop song not only has a great message, but showcases Michael's creativity. The music video has a moving theme (along with some great dancing!) and really makes you think and feel what Michael is trying to get across.

Credit to MichaelJacksonVEVO

"Human Nature"
With it's affective lyrics and catchy melody, "Human Nature" is another one of those songs that makes you think, as well as showcasing a purity to Michael's voice that only a few songs have. This song seemed to stand out to me when hearing it on the radio the day he passed, and has since become one of my favorites.

"Man in the Mirror"
"Man in the Mirror" has been one of my favorites since the beginning, always playing that music video over and over. Not only do I love the message in the song, but the video too is inspiring. Also showing MJ's sweet caring nature, this song shows everything that was to love about him.

"Thriller"
In my opinion, "Thriller" will always be one of the best known songs from Michael, and though it's not my favorite, considering the song's feedback, I know this is one of the best. Whether it's on Halloween or at a dance party, "Thriller" is a song that gets you moving, especially if you know that signature dance! With a creative video and a catchy beat, this is definitely the #1 Michael Jackson song.

Honorable mention: "The Way You Make Me Feel"
You didn't think I was only choosing 5 did you? How could you with so many MJ hits? "The Way You Make Me Feel" holds another one of those famous MJ beats. This pop love song shows Michael's great voice in a tune that will definitely have you dancing!

I hope everyone has enjoyed my Top 5 week! Hopefully I've either pegged your musical taste right on the money or have introduced you to new music by these five great, inspirational and always enjoyable artists.

Blast from the past: David Cook's debut album

Having just released his sophomore album not too long ago, it's hard to believe it's already been three years since American Idol winner David Cook released his debut album. David Cook was released on November 18, 2008, just a week after runner-up David Archuleta released his debut album. Cook's album made #3 on the Billboard 200 and #2 on Billboard Top Rock Albums. Not only on the album were hit singles "Light On" and "Come Back To Me"," but American Idol winner's single "Time of My Life," one of the most popular winner's singles, as well as all new original songs by the rocker. Between the upbeat songs like "Declaration" and "Life on the Moon," the inspirational tracks like "Heroes" and "Mr. Sensitive" and the soft but edgy "Permanent" ballad, Cook shows off his strong, endearing voice with meaningful lyrics in these captivating songs. Three years later and though he's found his sound and has changed things up with his music, this album  is what showcases everything you loved about Cook back in 2008.

Check out the making of Daughtry's Break The Spell!

With the release date approaching, check out the making of Daughtry's new album Break The Spell!

‎5 days, 5 artists, 5 songs! Day 4: Top 5 - David Archuleta

As a big David Archuleta fan, I know second place is his sweet spot. Whether it's his sweet balladeer side or his fun pop side, whether it's the crooner in him or the enthusiastic belt-it-out-like-there's-no-tomorrow part of him, David is truly one of the most amazing performers I have ever seen. David's got a big voice and the heart to match, singing always about positivity and the good things in life. Here are, in my opinion, the Top 5 best songs by David Archuleta:

"Imagine"
If you asked anyone what song they remember most from David during American Idol, I'm pretty sure 99% would say "Imagine." His slower cover of the famous John Lennon song shows the best of David in every way; David's powerful voice singing this inspirational ballad as David truly believes in every word he's singing, that is the "magic" that is in this performance.

Credit to zzcali

"Crush"
There's just something about "Crush" that brings every David Archuleta fan right back to the summer of 2008 when it was a hit on the radio all over the country. Now, after hearing the song every day on the radio and David singing it at every concert, some may get tired of listening to it after a while. But even so, once that known piano melody starts playing, you can't help but listen to David sing and wonder, "Is it real or just another crush?"

"Touch My Hand"
From the very first time I heard it, "Touch My Hand" has always been one of my favorites from David's debut album. The song is quite simple: David sings about being on stage and singing to his fans, and wanting to take in the moment and take their hands. When David performs this song live, he puts even more emotion into it and connects to his fans in a whole new way as everyone he's singing to also relates to the lyrics, "Can't let the music stop, Can't let this feeling end, Cause if I do it'll all be over, I'll never get the chance again"

Credit to DavidArchuletaVEVO

"O Holy Night"
I had to throw in a Christmas song, after all, David's Christmas album Christmas From The Heart is one of my favorites and David is sure to sing this song on his My Kind of Christmas Tour in December (at least I hope). I went back and forth between this song and David's original "Melodies of Christmas", as that song too is my real favorite from the album. But "O Holy Night", though bored me at first, now seems to have a deeper meaning to me, probably because I remember every second about seeing David perform this song live. David sang this as his encore during his Christmas tour in 2009, and as I stood there as the music began, him singing as his voice soared throughout the concert hall as he sang each note beautifully, I was awed. For the rest of the night, that was the song that was stuck in my head, making the night simply unforgettable, which is why I chose this concert video of David performing "O Holy Night" in Boston:

"The Other Side of Down"
Though I have many favorites from David's sophomore album, the title track is definitely one of the best. With it's uplifting beat and David's captivating voice, "The Other Side of Down" goes through the ups and downs of life and puts you in a positive mindset, making you want to be 'on the other side of down'. One of my favorites performances of this song was when David sang it on FOX's New years Eve Live in 2010. The strong impact  of David's voice and these lyrics that shines through in this performance is fun and inspiring (not to mention he looks really cute!)

Honorable mention: "God Bless America"
I've posted about David's amazing version of "God Bless America" before, which is why I made it an honorable mention. Even more so this year, I've noticed how absolutely stunning David is when he sings patriotic songs. He always kills it when he sings the National Anthem, and I guarantee he will blow you away with this version of "God Bless America":

Check out the full song below!

Now if only BTR would release the full version of "Shot In The Dark" and the yet to be released song "Heya", which was co-written by David Archuleta...

‎5 days, 5 artists, 5 songs! Day 3: Top 5 - Demi Lovato

Not only does Demi have an awe-inspiring voice, but she herself has become an inspiration to so many people all over the world with her story, and her music. Between the pop rock love songs and the inspirational ballads, here are my all time favorite Demi Lovato songs:

"This Is Me"
Who hasn't felt what Demi sings in this song from Camp Rock? "This Is Me" gave you the first real glimpse of Demi's amazing voice back in 2008, ad not long after did her debut album come out. "This Is Me" may be a Disney bubble gum pop song, but the feeling Demi puts into the song makes it so much more than that.

Credit to tyronnarito

"Don't Forget"
An emotional ballad that turns into a rock anthem, "Don't Forget" pure genius in my opinion. It's my favorite song off of Demi's debut album, and really showcases how great Demi's voice is.

Credit to Credit to hollywoodrecords

"Here We Go Again"
The title track of her sophomore album, "Here We Go Again" was one of my songs of the summer of 2009. This catchy pop rock song is one of the best from Demi, with it's fun, summery beat and edgy heartbreak lyrics.

Credit to Credit to hollywoodrecords

"Skyscraper"
The first single off of Demi's third album Unbroken, "Skyscraper" is emotional and uplifting as Demi sings about rising up like a skyscraper. Inspiring and powerful, "Skyscraper" is definitely one of my favorite songs of Demi's.

Credit to DemiLovatoVEVO

"Lightweight"
"Lightweight" is my favorite song off of Demi's Unbroken, for a lot of reasons. Not only is it a catchy and well written song, but the lyrics are completely relatable. If you consider yourself a 'lightweight' and have someone in your life you keeps you from falling apart, this song is probably your life story.

‎5 days, 5 artists, 5 songs! Day 2: Top 5 - Big Time Rush

Still new to my music library, Big Time Rush has definitely become one of my favorites bands this year. After a big time summer of being introduced to their music and seeing them live in concert, they've made me realize that they're not just a little boy band on tv, but four great performers who have come together to make great music and a great tv show. Here's my Top 5 favorite Big Time Rush songs:

"Big Time Rush"
Gotta go big time! BTR's song "Big Time Rush," in my opinion, defines Big Time Rush on the show. Described as a song about four hockey players who have a great opportunity and are going for it 'big time', the song is Big Time Rush.

Credit to BigTimeRush1st

"Boyfriend"
Probably one of the most popular songs from BTR, "Boyfriend" was the first song of theirs I ever heard, and seems to be stuck in my head quite often. With it's catchy beat and cute lyrics, this song will have every girl looking for a boyfriend... as long as it's Kendall, James, Carlos or Logan that is!

Credit to BigTimeRushVEVO

"The City Is Ours"
From the beginning, "The City Is Ours" has always been one of my favorites. It's so upbeat and catchy, and gets you in a dancing mood, and is a hundred times better live!

Credit to BigTimeRushVEVO

"Worldwide"
BTR doesn't sing many ballads, but out of the few they have, "Worldwide" is definitely my favorite. The emotion the guys have in this song is so real as they sing about a girl leaving them, though they're thinking about her 'worldwide'. They put so much feeling into this song, and hearing the softer side of the guys as apposed to their pop rock songs is quite endearing.

Credit to BigTimeRushVEVO

"Cover Girl"
Ok, I might be giving you guys a spoiler with this one. "Cover Girl" is off of BTR's new album Elevate, available next Monday, and though it's hasn't officially been released yet, I can't stop listening to it! I'll wait until release day to give everyone my actual review of the song, but at the moment this adorable love song shows a new, refreshing sound and sweet voices of the guys, and it's become one of my new favorites!

This past weekend, David Archuleta filmed a taping for the new Pandora Unforgettable Holiday Moments on Ice special, airing on NBC on November 27! ‎5 days, 5 artists, 5 songs! Day 1: Top 5 - Port Chuck

Over the last year or so, I've really became a fan of Port Chuck. Being a fan of both General Hospital and music, this band is pretty perfect, in my opinion. Steve Burton, Bradford Anderson, Brandon Barash and Scott Reeves make up Port Chuck, a rock and pop cover band who make it very clear that they all love what they do, and love getting to share it with all of their fans.

"No One Like You"
"No One Like You" is one of the first song I heard Port Chuck cover, and it's practically become their own. Bradford's voice is clear and endearing, and all of the guys really seem to get into this one.

Credit to IrisC72869

"Jessie's Girl"
Port Chuck's cover of "Jessie Girl" is kind of ironic, considering Rick Springfield has been on General Hospital numerous times as Doctor Noah Drake/Musician Eli Love. This is a song you can't not love, no matter who is singing it, and Port Chuck always seems to add their own uniqueness to it.

Credit to PoriaVida

"Knockin' On Heaven's Door"
Brandon always seems to get into this one, with his smooth, almost balladeer-like voice. This song always adds a calm and enjoyable point to Port Chuck's shows, bring it down a bit a just hearing the guys' voices.

Credit to meldiva75

"American Girl"
"American Girl" is another one of those songs that have almost become their own. This upbeat, rock song showcases Brandon and Bradford's voices and allows all of the guys to get into it and have a good time.

Credit to chyyyone

"Hallelujah"
Scott's cover of "Hallelujah" was used for general Hospital once before, and really shows off his engaging voice and guitar playing, as the slow song brings their show down a notch.

Blast from the past: David Archuleta's debut album

Let's take a trip back to November 11, 2008. Just out of a summer full of American Idols Live tour concerts and longs days of writing and recording, on this day three years ago, the 17 year old American Idol runner-up was getting ready to release his self-titled debut album. Already having such a strong reaction from his first single "Crush," there was no doubt David's album was going to take off, and it becoming #2 on the Billboard Hot 200 proved that. Along with "Crush" was pop favorites like "A Little Too Not Over You", which David helped pen, and "Touch My Hand" mixed in with "You Can," the cute, guitar-based ballad and "To Be With You," the strong piano ballad that showcased some of David's best vocals on the album. Also included was a cover of the Robbie Williams hit "Angels," which David had performed previously on Idol, as well as the Idol tour. A good mix of pop and ballads, this album was young, fresh and full of catchy tunes - not to mention that voice.

Three years, three albums and a worldwide plethora of concerts and tours later, David is still going strong. Though David has grown up and matured with his music over the past three years, David Archuleta will always be the album that kicked off his solo career, and still to this day is a great album to blast.

Song of the Night: Kris Allen's "Everybody Wants To Rule The World"/"The Way You Make Me Feel" mash-up

While on a search for David Archuleta and David Cook videos from the Ronald McDonald House charity event tonight, I came across this video of Kris Allen's concert back in August. He performed a mash-up of Tears For Fears' "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" and Michael Jackson's "The Way You Make Me Feel," and I think it's genius! I've never realized how those two songs fit together so well, and Kris' voice sounds great on both! Random, but you must check it out!!

Interview with Pianist Micah McKinnis

Credit to McKinnis Family Alaska
Micah McKinnis is a great pianist from Alaska with an amazing story to tell. Last year, while practicing his music for the MTNA State Competition, a tragic fire burned down his family home. Now with a story of strength, courage and a love for music, Micah has taken the time to talk with me about his piano playing and how, with his story, he wants to encourage others. I think anyone reading this will find great wisdom and inspiration in these answers.

1. When did you start playing the piano?
I started playing piano at the age of 7. My mom was my first teacher, but after a short time, I started taking from a local musician who played nearly every instrument imaginable, but whose forte was in flute. Regardless, he gave me a vital foundation: the
love of music. This has stuck with me throughout my
                                                                                      life.
2. What made you choose the piano?
When I was very young, my grandparents actually gave my family an old upright piano. As I grew older, I would be found sitting on the bench, playing, and evidently enjoying it greatly. I seemed to have a desire to play music, and I expressed that by using the only instrument available to me. However, there are many times where I could have switched instruments, but I have come to appreciate the unique qualities of the piano. There's just so much emotion and depth of colors that are distinct to the instrument.

3. Last year you were preparing to participate in a competition for the MTNA (Music Teacher's National Association) State Competition, when a tragic fire took place and you lost three pianos, among other things. What gave you the courage to move forward and perform in the competition?
The loss of our home truly affected and strained me and my family incredibly. However, there were several things that were indispensable to me during the time: friends and faith. So many people from all different backgrounds provided support through gifts, physical labor and prayer. Through this, I was encouraged to move forward. In retrospect, I would also say that the experience also provided me with an emotional maturity that became evident in my music. Music became a vent, a means of expressing emotions that words could not convey.

4. What are some of your favorite songs to play on the piano? Have you composed any of your own?
I really enjoy playing a lot of pieces, so that is rather difficult to determine. One of my favorites is a piece that is rather obscure: Sonata-Fantasie No. 2 in G sharp minor by Alexander Scriabin. It has so many different colors and musical ideas; it keeps the music fresh and interesting every time that I play it. I also improvise quite a bit, as it really is relaxing for me. I have actually written a couple songs as well, but they haven't made it onto paper at this point. I'm hoping I'll get around to it someday!

5. When you're not playing the piano, what else do you like to do?
Perhaps uncharacteristically for a pianist, I am active in various sports and activities. I also coach gymnastics and teach piano lessons. Living in Alaska, the outdoors are easily accessible. This is something I have really come to appreciate, especially during the long winter... Downhill skiing, whether at a resort or in the backcountry, is the best. It always is a welcome break at the end of the day to get up and do something away from the incessant call of school and homework.

6. Does music run in your family?
Not really! My parents both played an instrument when they were younger, but never kept it up. Humorously, my grandfather always wanted my mom to play piano, but for various reasons, she never did. So... my family says that his wish was just granted a generation late.

7. What's been the best advice ever given to you?
Some of the best advice I have received actually arrived in a high school graduation card that I received from a good friend in medical school. Among the bits of wisdom that he included were two statements that specifically caught my attention. "Mentor others with your knowledge - pass it on freely to them," "Be humble or you will end up being humbled." I have found that both these statements contain exceptional goals for me to have, regardless in what area of my life they are applied.

8. In what ways have you used your story to encourage others to overcome adversity?
I have been blessed with many opportunities to share my story with others, through my episode on The Real Winning Edge, speaking events with TeenPact Leadership Schools and personal interaction with many individuals that I have come in contact with. I trust that those who hear my story are encouraged in the fact, that though hardships do come, in all sorts of ways and at unexpected times, they do not have to feel overwhelmed, but through faith and friends, every troubling time can be an important learning experience.

9. How would you define the word success?
That's a deep one there, considering all the different aspects the term can be applied. Specifically in music, I would define a successful performance as a performance which relates to the audience in a way that leaves them emotionally impacted. There is something in certain performers that allows them to present music which has a unique ability to speak to those listening. Some famous pianists, such as Sviatoslav Richter and others, possessed this ability, and this is what I strive for in my playing: to express my emotions through music, so that listeners will come away affected. However, in a larger sense, I think that success is best exemplified when one develops and uses their talents to the best of their ability, and shares it with others.

10. What do you have to say to musicians, or anyone, who faces a challenge and might think of giving up?
Around the world, there are many different challenges that can rise up and pressure anyone to give up a particular goal or dream. My advice is this: if God has given you a talent and a means by which to develop it, don't give up because of difficult circumstances. You will always regret it. Keep pressing on. Whether you're heartbroken, hurting, or experiencing other difficulties, don't isolate yourself, but instead use the emotions and feelings that you are experiencing and channel them into your talent. People are looking for and appreciate reality in art; things that they can identify with in their everyday lives. Express the reality of your life through your lyrics or music, and you will begin to see that every challenge brings a new lesson and fresh inspiration.

Thanks again to Micah for doing this great interview and sharing your story and deep insight on music and challenges, and I see a bright and musical future for you!

Go HERE to watch Micah tell his story on FOX's The Real Winning Edge.
